Oceanside Village - Shark Bay

Coastal Excellence

On the far western edge of Australia, where the continent meets the Indian Ocean, lies the breathtaking Shark Bay World Heritage Area – Gutharraguda, meaning “two waters” in the language of the Malgana Traditional Owners.

Spanning more than 2.2 million hectares between 24° and 27° south, this remote marine paradise is one of the world’s most extraordinary natural treasures. Its vast landscape features two sheltered bays separated by peninsulas and a long, slender island chain, creating a stunning meeting point of turquoise shallows and deep indigo waters.

Shark Bay is a living masterpiece: home to thriving seagrass meadows (the largest on Earth), ancient stromatolites – the planet’s oldest living fossils – and an abundance of rare and endangered species, from dugongs and bottlenose dolphins to loggerhead turtles and manta rays.  Its hypersaline waters, dramatic red cliffs, pristine white beaches and sweeping dunes form a scene of raw, untouched beauty.

It is one of the few places on the planet satisfy all four of UNESCO’s natural World Heritage criteria, but Shark Bay does – a true global icon of biodiversity, geological wonder and cultural significance.
